Who would’ve thought a Sunday morning trip to Keat Hong Shopping Centre could lead to a new love for local arts? A group of Gen Zs recently discovered the vibrancy of traditional Malay percussion and community through NADI Singapura, thanks to ArtsEverywhere@CDC, a new arts initiative by the National Arts Council bringing culture to the heartlands.

"I wasn't expecting to be so captivated by traditional Malay percussion," shared Wei Xuan, a 23-year-old student who travelled from Bedok to Choa Chu Kang to catch the event. "The energy, the passion – it radiated a lot of good vibes!"
Fresh graduate Tiffany, 23, invited by Wei Xuan, echoed this sentiment. "It’s really good vibes on a Sunday morning. The music just makes you want to join in. I’m not really an 'arts girlie’. Maybe coming to these a few more times will make me one!”

Formed in November 2011, the NADI Singapura ensemble comprises young and aspiring musicians who believe in uplifting their traditional drums and percussions like no other. The group's ability to connect with the audience, regardless of age or background is not lost on these young Singaporeans.

"They know how to interact with people, and the instruments are quite fun to play," said Shah, 25, who describes himself as a ‘9-to-5’er. Shah lives in another heartland nearby and was checking out the event with his fiancée. "I was sitting next to an uncle and we were playing the drums together. Seeing how much fun the older folks were having also has made me realise that arts can bring people together."

For NADI Singapura, touring Singapore and performing in these community spaces has been a rewarding experience and an opportunity to engage new audiences. "Every heartland is different, but the audiences are always fun and receptive. We've had the opportunity to meet people from all walks of life, share our passion and culture, especially with younger people who might not be exposed to it," said Zulfahmi Othman, performer and percussionist in NADI Singapura. “I think music just unites the community."
Another artist participating in the first phase of ArtsEverywhere@CDC is Tan Qing Lun, the Co-Founder/Creative Director of yIN Harmony. He also shared his experience "We see it as a wonderful chance to share our music and culture with heartlanders, creating meaningful connections with our audiences."

ArtsEverywhere@CDC is just one example of how the arts can inject vibrancy in our neighbourhoods and foster a sense of community. By providing accessible and engaging cultural experiences that everyone can enjoy, ArtsEverywhere@CDC brings the arts to audiences, so that residents of all ages can enjoy the arts at their doorstep. Such initiatives can encourage people to step out of their comfort zones and explore new things - especially about our own Singapore artists!
For many, these events offer a much-needed respite from the digital world. They provide opportunities to connect with others, learn something about themselves and appreciate the beauty of art and culture. “This is something you cannot see on social media. When you experience and feel it in real life, it’s way different than just watching something online.” says Shah.

17-year-old student Azumie also has another reason to attend ArtsEverywhere@CDC - she says it’s important for young people to support local talent. “We’re locals, right? So we need to support local artists too. Supporting brings creativity to life, making the experience meaningful and fun for everyone."
So, the next time you see a poster for a local arts event in your neighbourhood, don't hesitate to check it out - because arts is not only everywhere, it’s also for everyone. You might just discover a new talent, make new friends or simply have a lot of fun.
