Ground Up, In Between investigates what is the unique quality of a place that compels one to stay, and what draws new residents to it? Why is a particular landmark memorable?
Through drawing workshops, conversations and interviews with the community, the artists connected with residents that ranged from IT professionals, to artists, to SAF veterans. The workshops also considered ideas of camouflage in the landscape, as a tribute to
national defence.
What emerged was a portrait of a warm, caring neighbourhood. Many valued their intimate familiarity of long-time businesses and community spaces, while welcoming new faces and facilities.
One landmark beloved by many of the residents was the Dragon Playground. Apart from its well-known appearance, they spoke fondly of playing in the sand pit, a feature that no longer exists in newer playgrounds. The exhibition incorporates the presence of sand in its design, in acknowledgement of this distinctive feature. Visitors can also view the artworks created during the workshops, and access the research done by the artists to gain insight into the views of Toa Payoh residents.

Eh! Where You?

Blending into the surroundings is a survival technique demonstrated by many in the animal kingdom; colour changing by chameleons and squids, mimicry by insects such leaf insects and stick insects.
What about mankind? We use camouflage.
Participants will be guided to creatively express various ideas into camouflage techniques. Using the A4 Standees, create a form of camouflage to “disappear” into the background. EMS Art Collective will then collate the images done by participants and archive the drawings for the final exhibition.

Eh! Meet Where?

Landmarks in history and current timelines, are locations of importance. Traders, friends, families and even the intimate pairing of lovers choose to meet at these venues. In line with this, EMS would like to get the participants to realise these landmarks with drawing techniques and share their unique memories of these places.
Participants will be able to access images of the varying landmarks within Toa Payoh GRC via Wi-Fi. These landmarks will be then translated into landscape drawings by participants after being guided by EMS Art Collective’s input and advice for the technique application. EMS Art Collective will then collate the images done by participants and archive the drawings for the final exhibition.
This landmark drawing workshop will help in the discernment of landmarks and the importance of these structures to the Toa Payoh landscape. Participants will also be asked to share their memories of the landmark selected. The drawings will be returned to participants post exhibition.

Presenting contemporary art works and archival material that nuance Afro-Asian legacies that grew out of the Cold War, this exhibition traces a historical line between early regional imaginations such as Maphilindo to contemporary appropriations of Afro-Asian histories, such as China’s development of cultural infrastructure in Senegal.

For the House; Against the House takes the form of a debate where artworks, not words, make arguments. Drawing from the private collections of Jo and the DUO Collection, curators John Tung and Syed Muhd Hafiz set propositions for artists to respond through their practices. The new works are pitted against the storied collections.
