Tropical: Stories from Southeast Asia and Latin America
Tropical: Stories from Southeast Asia and Latin America spans the 20th century, tracing how artists from both regions forged connections and nurtured solidarities, defiantly reclaiming their place within the story of art. It is the world’s first large-scale exhibition to take a comparative approach between artistic expressions from Southeast Asia and Latin America, united as they are by their struggles against colonialism.
Featuring more than 200 paintings, sculptures, drawings, performances, and sensorial installations, this exhibition showcases the works of distinguished artists including Latiff Mohidin, Frida Kahlo, Diego Rivera, and Cheong Soo Pieng. Many of these artworks are presented for the first time in Singapore and showcased through radical exhibition designs the Gallery has developed in close collaboration with WOHA, the internationally acclaimed architecture firm.
Come discover remarkable parallels between artists from these distant parts of the world and join us in uncovering how art can become a vehicle for resistance and transformation.
