Tinggi Layang

Tinggi Layang is an audio-visual concert inspired by the Indonesia trance dance of Dolalak. Originating from Purworego in Central Java, Dolalak has continuously adapted to pop culture and evolved with social media. Its origin stems from traditional Javanese dance movement, mixed with imitations of colonial Dutch soldiers in cosplay party from the 1930s. The trance ritual is accompanied with songs of local mythologies, political banter and Islamic poems. The reality of Dolalak today is dominated by sexy young female influencers who garner millions of followers online while they dance to the tunes of the Indonesian pop genre dangdut as their contemporary repertoire. Tinggi Layang is part of the on-going project CosmicWander by artist Choy Ka Fai, whose works explore coloniality, dance and trance culture in Asia.
