Recent Paintings by Jeremy Sharma
Since returning to painting towards the end of the Covid pandemic after more than ten years of absence, Jeremy Sharma has re-discovered a newfound urgency in its representational form, revitalising it in medium and practice. His recent body of works addresses painting’s porosity to absorb the contingency of images through a format that functions as a series of private portals or mirrors to a mediated world. In selecting an image, he looks for qualities and values that elicit interest to make a painting, which he then proceeds to extract, crop, reduce, magnify or flatten. His subject then becomes one of seeing: a painting’s intermediality and its internal logic; its pictorial construction and emphasis on touch; its semblance of life and its capacity to engender memory and meaning.
