‘Oumuamua’s Tale

The greatest art movements have only been labelled as such in retrospect. As a process-based painter, Jay Ho adds his own language and expressions to the art movements of our memories. His latest solo exhibition, ‘Oumuamua’s Tale, reflects his personal journey of discovery and inquiry. From navigating the infinite possibilities of abstraction, to exploring properties of materials, to turning observations into reality, faith is a key component embedded in his art-making process.

‘Oumuamua (the Hawaiian name for “scout”) is an interstellar asteroid that was thought to be an alien object when it was first spotted in our solar system. A symbol for this exhibition, it is a seeker of connections across time and space. Many astronomical objects are named based on mythical sources, such as the Greek deities and figures of Inuit origins. Jay seeks to extend this to 'Oumuamua, as the many mysteries in its far-flung origins and billion year journey bring us insights into our relationship with the natural world. On the surface, Jay’s artworks hint at natural phenomena. On a deeper level, the works contribute to a wider story arc - an artist establishing the markers of our civilisation, at this present moment.
