CosmicWander: Expedition by Choy Ka Fai

Berlin-based Singapore artist Choy Ka Fai has been researching the metaphysics of the human body in the last decade, taking the body as a conceptual device for explorations into “post-human” choreographic ideas and alternative states of consciousness in a world distraught by different realities. His ongoing project, CosmicWander, explores shamanistic dance cultures in Asia. Venturing into the region in search of the most spectacular and immersive trance experiences, the artist has met over 50 shamans and filmed extraordinary dance rituals, from the wilderness of Siberia to the mythological practices in Java. CosmicWander: Expedition is a work-in-progress presentation of the project, set up as an experiential platform that presents and reflects on humanity’s attempt to connect and understand the universe beyond the visible realm.

Through a process of technological experiments, anthropological discoveries, and dance experiences that swing from the futuristic to the paranormal, Choy’s practice appropriates technologies and narratives to imagine new futures of the human body. His productions are often infused with a sense of the bizarre, and humour is used as a device to simultaneously disarm and expose preconceptions towards dance. In this manner, they serve too, as a means to interrogate present realities around the human body.

The exhibition, comprising multichannel video works over a 60-minute duration, will be on loop hourly from 12pm daily. Visitors may experience the works at any time and also explore the resources section at their own pace.

*Advisory: Mature themes. Viewer discretion and parental guidance is advised. As the performances are presented in a dimly lit space with fog, please proceed with care and exercise caution if you have sensitive respiratory conditions.
