Body, Door

Body, door is composed of hand-drawn and painted parts of a silhouette suspended across 7arches. Using illustrations of flora and fauna found in Jurong Lake Gardens, the biophilic work forms a deconstructed figure that is reassembled to a foetal position at a specific angle through the viewer’s perspective. Based on the idea that we are made out of parts that belong to the natural environment, the artwork explores the materiality and simultaneous immateriality of our bodies and their relationship to nature. When the viewer first encounters the artwork, its deconstructed presence suggests disparate works of flora and fauna. With every step the viewer takes, the artwork comes together and falls apart. Only when facing the anamorphic artwork head-on does the viewer experience its bodily form in full view and is offered an invitation into an arched passageway leading to nature. The artwork posits that it is only out of happenstance and on this plane/angle that we are formed the way we are. The work is completed by the observer – it is through their motion that the piece is made whole. Referencing photographic contributions from the community, the piece was built with the interconnected web of life in mind.
