Asam di Gunung, Garam di Laut: A Kain of Marriage
Humans are complex creatures shaped by layers that include ethnicity, culture, religion, language, gender, education, economic status amongst many others. These intersecting categories are not made equal. There is a power play within different relationships that forms in-group/out-group, majority/minority, dominance/subordinance, etc. This interaction of negotiations results in the formation of the third space, called hybridity. Asam di Gunung, Garam di Laut attempts to explore these daily tensions in the creation of a hybrid culture. What strategies do individuals use to find this third space, or the shared identity within all these value-clashes? Also, where else – art, language, or even in a seemingly mundane act such as getting dressed and choosing cutlery - do these confrontations occur so that life continues to function properly in our hybrid multi-cultural society?
