Capturing Flavours of Joo Chiat through the Lens of Camera

As the title suggests, this competition provides an avenue for photography aficionados to capture the essence of Joo Chiat through their very own perspectives. Through the competition, participants are also encouraged to see, feel and ultimately show the world what Singapore and their home means to them. This is the perfect conduit for photography enthusiasts from all walks of life to come together, and allow your ideas, aspirations and common passion for the art to flourish in the community!

Here’s a chance for enthusiasts to express their visual and artistic talents through the creatively stimulating art of photography! Organised by Mountbatten Constituency in conjunction with the South East District Arts Festival 2008, this competition is in line with the increasing popularity of photography as a hobby in recent years. Participants are required to submit their creative works in accordance to the themes of Eco-Friendliness and Racial Harmony. Expect a psychedelic display of vibrant colours, dynamic people and life’s diversities presented from intimate perspectives by photography lovers from all walks of life!
Graffiti Xpressions

To all graffiti arts lovers — here is your chance to express yourselves in an unbridled fashion through the hip and happenin’ art of graffiti! Spearheaded by the Racial Harmony Youth Ambassadors (RHYAs) commissioned by South East CDC, Graffiti Xpressions targets Singaporeans, New Citizens or Permanent Residents of different races who study in South East District schools. Themed “Friendship without Boundaries”, winners will get a chance to have their creative works of art displayed at various locations and Community Clubs / Centres situated within the South East District!
24-hr Playwriting Competition

The Eurasian Association Singapore
Calling all writing enthusiasts! Now into its 11th year, the 24-Hour Playwriting Competition, organised by TheatreWorks (Singapore), is the perfect opportunity to get those creative juices flowing in the name of fun. Held at interesting venues since its inception, participants are required to write and incorporate five stimuli into their play within 24 hours. This year’s competition marks South East CDC’s inaugural collaboration with TheatreWorks to bring it into the heartlands, and will be staged at a location within the South East District. Following the competition, a series of dramatised reading tours will also be run monthly from August 2008 to January 2009 within the South East District. Winners will be announced in November 2008.
Series of outreach Arts programmes
As part of this year’s South East District Arts Festival (DAF) to promote a culture of arts appreciation in the heartlands, a series of talks and workshops will be held over three weekends at the various Community Clubs / Centres and libraries in the South East District. Conducted by professionals in the various artistic domains that South East CDC will be showcasing at this year’s DAF, residents who fancy a little artistic flair in their lives can look forward to learning more about different art forms. For those who relish a chance to unleash their creativity through the arts, this is the event just for you! As part of the South East District Arts Festival 2008, Braddell Heights Zone B Residents’ Committee & the Inter-Racial Confidence Circle will be organising a Multi-Racial Variety show called Rolling Old Good Days, together with a Graffiti Painting Contest on Umbrella. Also organised in conjunction with Racial Harmony Day, these programmes provide arts enthusiasts with an opportunity to share their vocal and visual artistic perspectives with other like-minded friends of all races.
MUSIC aLive @ Fengshan!

One of the best ways to reach out to youths is through the universal medium of music. MUSIC aLive @ Fengshan! finds its roots in an event called Music by the Park, which has attracted a steady following of concert-goers throughout the years. The upcoming South East District Arts Festival 2008 is an appropriate conduit to stage this annual event on a bigger scale to touch wider audiences and enhance the diversity of the arts festival. It is also a performing stage for all budding musicians and young amateur bands to help them realise their potential, creativity and talents!
Bedok Superstar

A talent competition targeted at youths aged 15 to 40 years old, in search of the next big singing sensation or superstar in Bedok Constituency! This July, there will be something for everyone for residents of Bedok GRC & Joo Chiat SMC. At Bedok Superstar, residents can look forward to an evening of great fun and camaraderie with friends and family. Besides soaking up the exciting atmosphere of talented contestants crooning their best songs on stage, residents can also look forward to a carnival featuring various ethnic food, game stalls and kiddy rides, as well as a lucky draw with attractive prizes to be won!
Budaya Kita “Traditional Malay Wedding” with variety show

At this interesting event, with a distinctively Malay flavour, residents of all racial diversities will be able to gain a better understanding of the customs and practices inherent in a traditional Malay wedding, along with multi-cultural performances.
Chinese Cultural Show

An event for both the young and old alike, MacPherson Senior Citizens’ Executive Committee hopes to promote the appreciation of Chinese arts and culture through its traditional and contemporary arts forms — Chinese opera, modern dance and singing.
Multi-Racial Kids Art Exhibition

At this multi-racial event, residents can showcase their artistic talents and at the same time, bond through the art sessions. A great way for like-minded residents in the community to spend some quality time together!

As part of the South East District Arts Festival (DAF) 2008, South East CDC is proud to partner two performing groups — both with very different takes on the classic theatrical art of Bangsawan (traditional Malay opera) — to bring it right here to the South East District. Sri Anggerek Bangsawan will present a Bangsawan piece in its most authentic essence, while Cake Theatrical Productions will be infusing this traditional art form with a contemporary twist. This July, get ready to be captivated by magnificent stories of epic love and majestic wars in turbulent times, while reliving the spirit of the timeless art of Bangsawan that has fascinated generations of theatre goers!
